The Portuguese Nationality process has to start with an individual whose birth is registered in Goa.

After the birth and marriage of this individual is registered / transcribed at the Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais / Conservatoria do Registo Civil in Lisbon, Portugal, his / her decendants are eligible to apply for Portuguese Nationality / Portuguese Passport.

There are three stages to acquire Portuguese Nationality.

STAGE - I (PORTUGUESE PASSPORT FOR GOANS BORN BEFORE 1961).

List of documents required :

  • Birth Certificate.
  • Present Residence Certificate.
  • Complimentary Residence Certificate specifying the period of stay from 1st January 1974 to 31st December 1975.
  • Death Certificate (If the applicant is deceased).
  • Document of identification - Indian Passport along with Aadhaar Card or Election Card or Driving Licence with correct name as per birth certificate.
  • Birth Certificate and marriage Certificate of the applicant's parents.

Time Schedule to conclude the Portuguese Nationality registration process is approx. 10-12 months from the date of submission of your birth documents to the CRC, Portugal, subject to verification of the birth certificate of the applicant. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure that, the verification process is completed in time. We cannot guarantee the exact date of completion of the process.

IMPORTANT

New guidelines issued by the Conservatoria dos Registos
Centrais in the Documentation for Portuguese Nationality processes.

  1. All Birth and Marriage documents filed in the process are subject to verification if, the information cannot be verified on the Government Official Website.
    We advise all our clients to closely monitor the official website of the consulate and pursue the verification processes to avoid delays
  2. It is mandatory to submit a duly attested photo copy of Indian Passport of the applicant in all new and ongoing processes.
    Certificate of Identity is no longer considered as a recognised document of identity and no processes can be filed based on the same.
    Every client, whoever has relied on identification certificate as a proof of identity, will have to apply for Indian passport with correct names as per the applicant’s birth certificate.
  3. It is mandatory to submit an additional document of identification, such as Voting Card, Driving License or Aadhaar Card of all the clients whose Birth Certificates are issued by the Sub-Registrar of Margao.
  4. All documents issued outside Goa, will have to be attested by the applicant from their respective Regional Authentication Centre (RACs) for States/Union territories (www.mea.gov.in/apostille.htm).
  5. All documents issued outside India, should be attested by the Portuguese Embassy / Consulate / Mission in the region where the document has been issued.
  6. No specific time frame can be given for the completion of the processes due to these new guidelines.
STAGE - II (MARRIAGE REGISTRATION IN PORTUGAL).

List of documents required :

  • Birth Certificate of the spouse.
  • Death Certificate of spouse (If spouse is deceased).
  • Marriage Certificate of the applicant.
  • Document of identification - Indian Passport along with Aadhaar Card or Election Card or Driving Licence with correct name as per birth certificate.
  • Indian passport (photocopy) of the applicant. (Will not be required if the applicant is deceased).
  • Assento de Nascimento (photocopy) of the applicant.
    (Assento de Nascimento is the birth certificate issued by Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais in Lisbon, Portugal. This certificate can be obtained only on completion of Stage 1 that is Registration of birth in the Conservatoria de Registos Centrais)

Time Schedule to conclude the marriage registration process is approx. 4-6 months from the date of submission of your marriage documents to the CRC, Portugal, subject to verification of the birth and marriage certificate of the spouse. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure that, the verification process is completed in time. We cannot guarantee the exact date of completion of the process.

List of documents required :

  • Birth Certificate.
  • Document of identification - Indian Passport along with Aadhaar Card or Election Card or Driving Licence with correct name as per birth certificate.
  • Assento de Nascimento and Assento de Casamento (photocopy) of the applicant's parent.
    (Assento de Nascimento is the birth certificate issued by Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais in Lisbon, Portugal Assento de Casamento is the marriage certificate issued by the Conservatoria do Registo Civil in Lisbon, Portugal. Both these certificates can be obtained on completion of Stage 1 and Stage 2 that is Registration of birth and marriage of one of the Parent in Portugal).

Time Schedule to conclude the Portuguese Nationality registration process is approx. 6-8 months from the date of submission to the CRC, Portugal (if the birth certificate is available to verify online). If not, then the birth certificate will be referred for verification. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure that, the verification process is completed in time. We cannot guarantee the exact date of completion of the process.
